      About Clip-Art:

Clip-art is used to ad life to your letters, flyers, posters, brochures etc. There is no program on the CD, only images. You need to use a program that allows you to import photos and graphic elements.

Many people use Word Perfect, Microsoft Word, Microsoft publisher, Page Maker and/or Quark-Xpress to do this, however there are many word processing and publishing programs available that would work well with the CD. Most computers come with a program like Microsoft Word that will work just fine.

In Microsoft Word go to the insert menu then pull down to Picture then FROM FILE. Find the picture you wish to import and click insert. Microsoft word has a wonderful HELP menu if you need assistance in cropping or re-sizing the images, see your Microsoft Word manual if you have more specific questions.

In Microsoft Publisher go to the Insert menu, pull down to Picture file, find the image you wish to use from the CD-Rom and click Insert. Microsoft Publisher has an extensive HELP menu if you need assistance in cropping or re-sizing the images, see your Microsoft Publisher manual if you have more specific questions.

In Quark X-Press draw a picture box, make sure you are on the hand tool, from the FILE menu go to GET PICTURE.

Please e-mail me if you have any further questions.

      Tips:

You do not need to download the images off the CD and onto your hard drive. Use them right off the CD. However If you have a few images that you use frequently it may save you time to place these frequently used images on your hard drive.

Volume 1 Users: If you are having trouble importing the .eps illustrations on Volume 1, try importing the JPEG version of the same image. Some programs require a specific graphics filter to import specific types of images, refer your software manual. You shouldn't run into this problem on Volumes 2 & 3.

To edit the photos you will need photo editing program like Adobe Photoshop or Painter.

To edit the Illustrations you will need a program like Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw or Macromedia Freehand.

The illustrations can be edited using photoshop as well, however you will have less control.

      Printing Images:
Printing a document containing clip art is just like printing any other document. And, the images will look great whether you are using a color or black & white printer. However, there are a couple of issues you should be familiar with:

      Printing as Grayscale:
When printing a document with a color image, you should specify Color/Grayscale, regardless of whether your printer is capable of printing in color. Not doing so may not give you the shading you expect in print.

      Image File Links:
      >Clip art images you've placed into your document will always appear when you view it on-screen. But certain programs will link the clip art image files to your document and require the graphic files themselves in order to print the images properly. In these cases, it will be easiest to copy the relevant graphics files to your internal hard drive - specifically, to the same folder as the main document - prior to printing.

      Inkjet Printers:
If you are using a StyleWriter or other inkjet (non-postscript) printer, the clip art images in your document will print just as they appear on screen.

To use Hawaiian Clip-Art images when printing to a desktop printer:
      1. Locate the desired image(s) in the full color printed catalog.
      2. Copy the desired image(s) from the CD-ROM disc to your hard disk.
      3. Open or import the image(s) in your desktop publishing, graphics, or presentation program.
      4. Make sure you have the necessary printer driver selected for the particular device.
      5. Print a sample page to ensure that the results are correct before using high quality paper.
      6. Print out the page(s) to the printer by following the instructions provided with your page layout program.

      Frequently Asked Questions
Listed below are some of the frequently asked questions you might have using Hawaiian Design Elements Clip-art, along with solutions to each. You should also consult the user guide for the application you are using for answers to common problems associated with importing graphics.

      "Nothing happens when I double-click the clip-art."
Remember that Clip-art images are not applications. So double-clicking a clip art image from the desktop will, more than likely, not generate the desired result. See instructions earlier in this document on importing Graphics into your document.

"I can't seem to import images into my document."
Most word processing and desktop publishing programs rely on translators (sometimes called filters) to import (or place) images into a document. These translators should have been installed along with the word processing or desktop publishing software. But if installing translators was an option, you may have elected not to do so at the time. To resolve this problem, you may try re-installing your software.

"Why can't I change the colors of the images?"
Word processing and desktop publishing programs will place the entire image without giving you access to the individual pieces. But if you have a graphics program, you can make numerous changes, including changes to colors.

To edit JPEG files use a program such as Adobe Photoshop or PhotoPaint.

"Some images look jagged when I print them on my inkjet printer."
If JPEG images appear jagged, you should try using the high resolution file. You can also try making them smaller. Most images on this CD were not intended for printing larger than 8.5 X 11.

"What is the difference between the high resolution files and low resolution files images I find on my Hawaiian design Elements CD?"
Every volume contains both high and low resolution versions of the images pictured in the printed catalog pages included with the CD-ROM. The low resolution images are screen resolution (72 pixels per inch) JPEG-compressed RGB TIFF files. They are ideal for laser printouts, for position only (FPO) layouts and internet graphics. The high resolution images are print quality (300 pixels per inch) JPEG-compressed RGB TIFF files. Once decompressed, these images can be converted to CMYK, saved to your hard drive, digitally manipulated and ultimately placed into your page layout program and delivered to a print shop.

"Can I make the image larger or smaller?"
Yes. Depending upon the word processor or desktop publishing program you're using, you can resize the image, generally by clicking it and dragging inward on the handle in the lower right corner of the image. In some programs, you'll need to hold down the shift key. See your program's user manual for details.

"My documents do not print properly unless I leave the CD-ROM in my machine. The problem is, I'm using clip art from several CD-ROM's."
Many programs do not insert all of the data for graphics into their documents. Instead, they make links to the graphics files. Consequently, the graphics files need to be available when the main document is printed.
If you are linking graphics from several CD-Roms, or are are using a particular graphic often, it will be easiest to copy the relevant graphic file(s) to your internal hard drive, specifically to the same folder as the main document prior to printing.

"Will there be more volumes of Hawaiian Clip-Art?"
The staff at Hawaiian Island Images is always working on their next CD-ROM. You can expect to see new, different and more exciting images on future CD's. The easiest way to find out more is to visit our website (**** Please feel free to e-mail us any feedback ***)
